I surprised my partner Will, with a birthday weekend staycation. He knew nothing about the hotel, apart from it being in Cheltenham (just as well, because he was driving!). We were nearing it when – “OH WOW! NO.131 looks cool – we HAVE to go there whilst we are here” – little did he know this is where we were staying!
FRIDAY EVENING
On arrival, we were greeted with warm and attentive welcomes… (this level of hospitality continued throughout the duration of our stay; everyone really went the extra mile to provide such a wonderful service). Will described the atmosphere as a similar vibe to being a guest in someone’s house – we enjoyed a personable and relaxed experience, and everyone was so friendly.
Our room was beautifully furnished throughout with attention to the tiniest details, really giving us that traditional Cotswolds ambiance! There was a bottle of Champagne on ice awaiting us with some freshly baked brownies – if that wasn’t a wonderful welcome I don’t know what is!
For dinner, we indulged in a heavenly 3 course meal in the restaurant. Wow – what impeccable service, delicious food and incredible English decor combining to create an environment we couldn’t help but indulge in.
(I highly recommend the Passionfruit Cheesecake by the way!).
We then took our evening downstairs to their Gin & Juice bar, which, many people had exclaimed was the best bar in town – perfect! With hundreds of gins available, the barman asked our favourite flavour. Being me I strained over the multiple pages of different gins available, at which point he decided for us – turns out I couldn’t have picked it better myself….
SATURDAY MORNING
We awoke in the most luxurious, ginormous bed I’ve ever had the pleasure to wake up in. With a charming view of the church outside – we really were indulging in this exceptionally designed lavish bedroom. Each room at No.131 adopts a unique style whilst complementing the similar furnishings exceptionally. Room 3 was a perfect size, decorated with old classic flooring and offered an elegant bathroom with a free standing bath, his and hers sinks as well as showers (one to add to the dream board for my future house).
Breakfast was delicious! With such a charming atmosphere – twinkling background music and a delightful menu, it’s the perfect spot for a weekend brunch.
After which, we explored the gorgeous town of Cheltenham and enjoyed a spot of shopping.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON
We retuned to No.131 just in time for their BBQ on the terrace which they host at the weekend! Ensure to arrive early to grab a table as you do not want to miss out on this scrumptious summer supper.
We then caught a shuttle bus to Dunkertons Organic Cider Distillery as there was a mini festival going on. As Dunkerton himself owns the Lucky Onion brand, which includes No.131, we had to check it out. We revelled in cider, live music and summer sun – it was great fun!
SATURDAY EVENING
Being the day of the Champions League Final or as Will says “the biggest football match of the year” (although I swear this is the case for every match…), we headed into town to watch the game. Turns out so did everyone else – all the pubs were completely rammed with football fans – Cheltenham really did come alive in the evening!
On returning to No. 131 after said football match, we were offered the opportunity to experience another room (Room 16) so moved everything in and settled into our new pad. Despite the similar furnishings, Room 16 gave a different feel, with the style and elegance we had come to expect at No.131. The bathroom was an absolute dream, boasting the most beautiful tiles, modern shower and stand alone bath (again, definitely adding this to my dream inspiration board).
SUNDAY MORNING
After starting the morning right with a relaxing bath, we then headed to another luscious breakfast on the terrace. Whenever poached eggs and avocado are offered on the menu, I struggle to choose anything else…. you can’t beat it! And No.131 of course cook them to perfection every time.
SUNDAY AFTERNOON
Before heading back to London , we were treated to another restaurant in the Lucky Onion group, The Tavern, offering guests seriously yummy food and amazing drinks. We felt so welcome by all the friendly staff that helped to create the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a bite to eat before hitting the road back to London.
We couldn’t have wished for a more perfect weekend to celebrate our birthdays thanks to all the staff at No.131. Everyone we met across the weekend were so courteous and genuinely friendly, we couldn’t of felt more at home. After having the Cheltenham weekend of a lifetime we couldn’t recommend No.131 more highly to anyone and everyone seeking a chilled few days in this quintessential English town. With it’s divine food and drinks menu, as well as being set in the perfect location, No.131 offers guest an aesthetically stunning and incredibly welcoming place to relax across the weekend.
Thank you!
