Where nature meets fashion (Why I love wearing a wooden watch)…

As a self-proclaimed country bumpkin, I’d opt for countryside over city any day (don’t get me wrong – I love a good city break, but to live – it has to be in the country).  There’s something special about being in wide open spaces with lots of fresh air (and no, it’s not just because I’m claustrophobic), but because being surrounded by nature is somewhat a rarity these days in the developed countries; everything is so man-made, so technical, food has so many additives and everything is mass-produced. I’m not complaining because without all of this, life would be very basic, but slipping back into an environment surrounded by trees, flowers, flowing water and fresh air at the end of the day is rather calming. 

The Use of Wood

I recently stayed in a beautiful hotel right in the middle of the Austrian Alps set within a forest and due to it’s location the owners felt it highly important to harmonise with the surroundings and to keep the wood as the heart and soul of their hotel to provide the guests with the essence of engaging and living within nature. The furniture, the architecture, the walls, the floor, everything was made of wood. This biolphilic design really lent the opportunity to connect with nature and biophilia is all about how we, as humans, have an innate attraction to nature and natural elements which have a calming effect on the soul and has even been found to help with mental health and wellbeing.  So when I was offered the opportunity to work with a company who handcraft wooden watches (although a little perplexed about how the watches would look as they were a totally new concept to me), I couldn’t turn it down.

The word Jord means land, soil, ground and earth in Dutch. So this brand really aims to portray the use of pure materials and maintain the simplicity of elements whilst creating designer watches from natural materials and exotic wood grain.  

My Wooden Watch

I have been wearing my Dark Sandalwood & Smoke JORD watch now for a few weeks and I have found that there is something so unique about having a slice of nature strapped to my wrist. JORD Wood Watches have successfully  managed to combine simplicity with intelligence by stripping the materials back to basics but cleverly using this beautiful renewable material  to create a useful yet elegant piece of jewellery.  My watch is from their Frankie Series and is a handcrafted, classic, timepiece that I doubt could ever go out of ‘fashion’, but whilst still evoking a statement reputation, drawing people’s attention to this innovative idea of introducing fashion and nature as one. The watch is so elegantly created, with a glass face made from crystal sapphire glass, a lightweight design and neutral colours. I chose this particular watch as I wanted the wood to stand out and not be overshadowed by any bright colours (although of course, this was a personal preference and there are many other brighter ladies wood watch designs to choose from). 

I’d also like to mention the packaging of JORD Wood Watches; as they come in the most beautifully presented box which, even now, mine still emits such a strong smell of natural wood, taking me back to my time in the wooden hotel in the mountains.  So JORD have so expertly created a basic but clever, classical yet statement piece of elegant jewellery; this watch is the epitome of oxymorons but works so well as an item that will stay on my wrist for a long time to come.
